It has happened before and the minister concerned was talking about the need to upgrade the RM20m system that fails after about 5 years in service. Now,it is happening again....the management informed the public that action will taken soon. When is "soon", I have no clue whatsoever.
We all love to have the latest technology in our airports, water treatment plants, buildings and even our personal gadgets like mobile phone, pda etc. What more, if we could also incorporate the latest ICT stuff in them. From my experience, if we are dealing in projects involving critical public utilities,it is better to go for appropriate and proven technology. I know of one project(now there is a legal case going on), that the latest technology offered by a contractor had failed to meet the agreed specifications.
In project management, who decide what technology goes into a system? When something goes wrong, who is responsible and accountable?
I would luv to learn more about PM, but I guess I can't even manage my own self, hahahaha.
On the other hand, close to my doorstep is the university quite well known for its PM course; several Msians did their PhD there... maybe one fine day I enroll myself there, who knows :)

1. I think we (Malaysian profesionals) are lacking new knowledge ...of how to maintain something...
2. For that reason, Facilities Management came into the picture...
3. In FM, sustainability is a part of Facilities Manager's functions.
4. Asset Maintenance is another thing. FM can help to solve the problems in the Malaysian construction industry nowadays...

it is true that most of the time they can come up with proposal to purchase/replace etc. but they always forget about maintenance. just look at the car on the road for example, a lot of cars have non-working brake lights. not all but at least one. be it a kancil or a benz.
what happen in KLIA might be for the same reason, no maintenance.
I kind of agree with Khairusy that we need Facilities Management.

Just look at the state of KLCC Suria toilets and the place where we wash our hands at Asean Flavours! The level of maintenance does not commensurate with KLCC as a 5-star shopping complex.
I think all operators of airports, hospitals, shopping complexes etc must go back to school and learn about facilities management.
Khairusy: Could you let us know some websites/reference so that I could learn more about FM.
Without sound knowledge and skills, how could we develop and inculcate the culture of maintenance in our country?
The evidence of non-existence of maintenance culture is written all over the wall.

For me, when I manage project, my proposed solution will have a few options, and I will align the options into a table, and point out which is the best options, and that would be my proposal. This proposal is then presented to the customers and upper management for decisions. Once they approved it, it means that the solution is a solution that they choose. The proposal will have to consist of the risk of the options, thus, all risk are table upfront before the options are choosen. If the option did not perform as specified, if the risk has been comprehended, then no one is to blame, it is a risk that everyone took, even the customer/upper mgmt bought into it. However, if the risk is something that has not been comprehended before, then it is me or my team's fault for not comprehending it....

Insya Allah, I'm now trying to develop a new portal for Facilities Management.
http://www.geocities.com/portalkemudahan/
Hope with this new portal, we can discuss FM related issues and knowledge...

Travellers around the world will arrive at our beautiful and modern KLIA. It is really beautiful indeed. As a Malaysian, I'm proud. Yet, after coming out from the Portal, I found it a sad event. There is no airport in the green. Just airport with no maintain environment. Not only our high tech building didn't mantain but also our heritage and visiting places. Gua Tempurung for instance. Where is proper toilet or bathroom? Didn't mantain but collecting fees from visitors? Bullshit!! If Malaysia got sell a disposable toilet area, i think it will be very good in sales. Not only that. KLCC, attached to the famous Twin Tower / Petronas tower. The toilet is the bad impession we give to the travellers who talk about quality and hygiene. I think we should learn from Singapore. The toilet is always clean and well mantain. Even a small town in UK. Aberdeen for instance, cleaner than our big city like KL. Please mantain and don't waste government's money on High Profile building without mantain it.... Even though the investment of country is high but I think government should think of environment as well. What do you all think??
