Here is a nice and clean sidewalk located at Desa Pandan,Kuala Lumpur(KL).It is about 500 metres from where I lived for almost 25 years. We don't walk and we don't cycle around here-we drive our cars.By the way, this sidewalk is not meant for cycling and I saw some improvement to upgrade Desa pandan sidewalk but the width is about a metre. On weekends,I saw people walking but seldom see people cycling.
Desa Pandan is less than 100 metrers from the city famous Selangor Golf Club-one of the few green lungs for KL.
I can count with my fingers how many times I ever walk the sidewalks in KL.It is hot,bad air and noisy. Most of the time I drive my car. However, there is one place that I go almost every weekend when I lived in KL.It is the KLCC Garden. One loop is about 1.3km and I walk there three loops for my weekend exercise .Nowadays, more and more office towers and residential condos have grown around the garden and I felt like a dwarf surrounded by giants whenever I walk there.Since three years ago,I walk in Bangi and mostly in Putrajaya.
If you wish to see a lot of people walking in KL,just drop by at great shoping malls like Suria KLCC,Pavilion,Sungei Wang and SOGO.Yes, we Malaysia love shopping/eating and we walk in droves in an airconditioned environment.
Is there any social interactions on the sidewalk?Yes, but it is very little indeed. Most of us were rushing some where. Most of the time we were alone in a madding crowd!
