Getting cheaper hotels in Singapore

It must be more than 10 years since I stay in a hotel in Singapore.Yesterday and today,I was frantically looking for a hotel to stay for a night because I have to attend a one day seminar next week.The prices have increased by at least 50%.

During my corporate days in the 80's,I used to stay at hotel along Orchard Road in Singapore but now their prices are too expensive for a small time project management consultant like me.Most of the hotels rate are above SGD 200 per night.

Today I managed to call a friend who is a frequent visitor to Singapore.From his tips, I managed to call a few hotels and managed to book a room at $70 per night.
