"Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him,
And that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life,
Say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, But address them in terms of honor.
And out of kindness, Lower to them the wing of humility, and say: 'My Lord! bestow on them
Your Mercy as they Cherished me in childhood' " (Quran 17:23-24).
Last weekend,I ziarah the grave of my father. He died on the Friday morning of 5th Dec., 1980.Immediately when I laid my father to rest, my religous teacher came to me and whispered:"Berdu'alah kepada Allah supaya ayah mu diterima dan dikasihi Allah sebagaimana dia mengasihi mu semasa kamu kecil".Only yesterday I discovered that the du'a I recited was as in the above ayat.At that time, I did not have any children yet and I only understand the meaning of how much our parents love us when I became a father a year later.
I consider myself a very lucky man because my mother is still alive. My mother is luckier than me because her mother is also still alive.By the way, my mother is about 70 years old and my grandmother is in her 90's.Thank you,Ya Allah for your kindness.
I am writing this as a reminder to me and to those who still have parents of our responsibilities to take care of our aging parents especially if they are sick.My grand auntie told me that she could take care of half a dozen children but she is not sure whether her six children will/could take care of her when she is old and sick. She is now in her 80's.I am glad to note that two of her children have been taking care of her now on the daily basis. This is a good lesson to me so that when my time comes to take care of my mother ,I will be a good son to her when she no longer could look after herself.May Allah give me the strenght to do it...
The ayats mentioned above and below are the commands of Allah swt that we as muslims and muslimahs MUST obey. Many a time, we tend to forget/neglect our aging parents when we are too busy with our work and our own family affairs.
"And We have enjoined on man to be good to his parents: In travail upon travail did his mother bear him and in two years was his weaning. Show gratitude to Me and to your parents" (Quran 31:14).
To all mothers out there, may I wish you Happy Mother's Day.
Oh Ibu,engkaulah ratu hatiku...
Note: The yellow rose is for my mother:-)
