A few days ago I dropped by at the Times bookshop and ended up buying a new novel by Joanne Harris. The last book I read and written by her was Chocolat.I also watched the movie.
By the way, I have not started reading the book yet, so I can't give any comment about it.What attracted me about this novel(other than it was written by Joanne Harris),it is the title. When I joined the corporate world in mid 80's, one of my peers told me that in order to be successful, I must be a player more than a gentleman. In 1989, I decided to quit the corporate world and started business of my own.One of the reasons of my decision was that my personality collided with personality and the lifestyle of the player.
Personally,I don't mind getting less money and power as long as I can live the way I wanted and the life style I live is convergent with my values. As one gets older, what really matters is what one really enjoys doing by choice and not by circumtances.
I started my working life as an engineer in JKR(PWD).After a few years, my late father who was a teacher asked me to become a teacher. At that time, it was the last job I would do.Over the last quarter of a century, I have been a government officer,a,project manager in a property company,a corporate executive,a constultant engineer and a contractor. From December 2005 onwards, insyaAllah, I would be more involved in teaching project management than in doing engineering business. At last, my father's wish will be fulfilled-25 years after his death.By the way, it is not his wish anymore;it is more of my choice.
Just in case you weren't aware the reference to Gentlemen and Players comes from cricket. Players being paid to play whilst, obviously, Gentlemen had no such need.
If I remember correctly it was only in the 1960s that a Player was able to captain a team.
