The picture on the left is the Golok River. I estimated the width is about 20m and the depth is about 7 metres(according to the boat man). At other locations, the width may be narrower and the water may be knee deep during dry season. The photo is taken near the bus station,Rantau Panjang,Pasir Mas,Kelantan.
Yesterday, I have lunch with my cousin and my son at Rantau Panjang. We were on our way from Jeli to Bachok. I was trying to locate a restaurant that was famous for great 'tom yam' when I was much younger, but it was not there any more.Things have changed so much over the last quarter century when I was JKR district engineer for Kelantan Barat(Tumpat,Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah). Now, Rantau Panjang town is a free trade zone like the one in Pengkalan Kubur ,Tumpat. A few of my friends from outside Kelantan love going to these free trade zones for the cheap goods.
Now,Rantau Panjang is congested with bus-loads of tourists especially during school holidays.
PS: Here is the link to a very tall waterfall called Gunong Stong, about 50km from Jeli.We only managed to reach the bottom of the waterfalls..
pity we didn't have enough time to go shopping neither at P'lan Kubur nor R. Panjang baru ni. frankly, I only been to Golok once when I was small, eventhough we do have many relatives on that side (one crosses the border daily bringing veg to Pasar Siti Khadijah).

Abedib,
I am often in KB.. me think almost every month.. in fact last two weeks I was there Monday & Tuesday. Been visiting KB since 2001 but only manage to go Rantau Panjang early this year for the first time.
I will avoid visiting KB during school holidays. Last time during that period I have to stay at a friend house for three nights.. :-( all hotels fully booked, even hotel cap ayam.
Food in KB.. just order what I want to eat. ;-)

Abedib:
Thanks for yr posting that bring me lots of memory of my beloved land. I always make a point to go to Kalle Kuboo every time I am back in Klate (visiting my beloved religious teacher's 'makam') ... and sometimes if got enough time 'will jemerae kor Tabba cari berah muroh & buwoh2 ...one time I even get to buy 'buku-lima' which is somewhere in my house here that i used as a paper weight... Hope u will blog more abt places in Klate in near future. Now we have u who blog abt Klate & beta-blogger who from time to time writes elegantly his 'Growing up in Terengganu stories'.
Honeytar:
You are very fluent in 'french' even though you are a 'finnish'. Hebat sakang orang ganung kiter. I have a ganung couple friends who just arrived here this morning visiting us for a couple of day before leaving to Dublin for a conference. Dok syok kecek klate nga orang ganung...we speak in kLate & they converse in ganung and somehow we fully understand both parties.
mhi:
You are indeed right. For someone who grew up in KB, sometimes it is so 'gelabuk' & so difficult for me to move around during school holiday. Most of the time I will settle for my dad's 'basikal unta' which he still rides everywhere in KB since his young days.
Atok:
You should writes something abt your recent trip to KB eventhough it is for only 4 days. Kawe ning tok tahu bilor la nok keliknyor.
Sang Kelate.

SK,
It is quite some years I have not heard of 'buku lima'. I hope no one will use it nowadays.
If Sungai Golok can talk, it can tell many stories of people crossing it...

SK: I am 'french' but I go 'skoloh' on 'finnish' land ('makang ikang dalang pinggang di dalang dewang makang, minung air dalang cawang).
After some 'celup' a bit here and there, I became a unique Malaysian. My eyes are still brown though. ;-)
Pah gak tunggu 'ggapo lagi SK, kelik laa wei... Malaysia Merdeka 47thn doh ni.
btw, what is 'buku lima'? (i failed on this one). :(

"Buku lima" was notoriously famous when I was a teenager(in the 60's).
Btw, it is not a book but a metallic weapon worn on the hand to punch others.

To add a few:
Buku lima ialah sejenis alat senjata tradisional melayu yg selalunya diperbuat drp tembaga dan dipakai dengan memasukkan kelima-lima jari tangan kedalam lubang2nya.Ianya digunakan utuk menyerang musuh dgn menumbuknya. Senurut sumber yg boleh dipercayai, adalah menjadi satu kesalahan jenayah di M'sia jika pemiliknya ditangkap ditempat awam bersama buku lima. Tidaklah hairan kalau ramai golongan muda yg tidak tahu apa itu buku lima, lawi ayam & lain-lain senjata tradisional melayu.
Ambo, ambo tokgi lagi mmundok, hok acak nyor Tabba la, Gollok & Bukit Ta pun sekali jah.
