I asked a friend why it is mandatory for us to attend Friday prayer every week. He replied that most of us are forgetful and need to be reminded by the khutbah every Friday.IMHO, even on the daily basis, we are still forgetful;that is why we need to pray five times a day...and many still forget of our ubudiyyah to Allah swt.
Friday prayer is a weekly event for all muslims. So much so, it becomes a routine that we tend to forget about its fadhilat. In most occasions, many will rush to the mosques( sometimes late),listen to the sermon ,pray and left quickly back to the office. It is no more an occasion that we prepare ourselves, dress nicely and go early. It is just another Friday prayer...
Just answer this question: Do you still remember what the last week khutbah(sermon) was about? If the answer is no, that is a reflection on how much attention we had given to the khutbah last week.
Tomorrow is another Friday, insyaAllah for all of us.Let's determine to do better than the last Friday-in all aspects of our prayer.
Note: Please read the link given on fadhilat Jumaat that I have taken from MUIS.The photo shows Masjid as-Syakirin at KLCC,Kuala Lumpur.
Pak Adib, i agreed with you and your friend there. besides that, the friday prayer can also help us to mix around and get to know our neighbours more (at least). good rapport with another muslims, education, career and business opportunities is another things to look into. But, of course it's all should being done after the friday prayer took place.

Talking about friday prayers, I pity some people who `choose' to sleep during the sermon. Some may just position themselves in `strategic' places.
Muslims need friday sermons to revitalise their spirit and to strenghten their faith.
Atleast once a week..

Pak Adib, I don't attend friday prayers here. However, some of my male friends complain though that the khutbahs tend to be boring, or too pro-government...What are your thoughts on this?

Zsarina,
I do agree with your male friends' view, but not all are boring and not all are pro-government.This relates to art of communication(which I am not an expert).IMHO, the message must have good contents and delivered properly to get the attention of the audience.
If good sermons were delivered to 'couldn't care less' audience, the message could not get through.
We need both good speakers and good listeners.

today i attended prayer at the masjid jamek in the center or KL and as usual, just like my other friday prayers there, have to pray outside, under the hot sun. "peluh menitik-nitik" on the sejadah and definitely, there's not much space to hold thousands of jamaah in downtown KL ... go tabung haji .. same case, go KLCC mosque ... same case. i think some of the mosque need to think of expansion of covered areas. definitely, awning or other solutions esp. for mosque like masjid jamek KL is a good move.
yes, zarina. most khutbah in KL has deliver that kind of message. i guess, my favorite mosque in KL is the sri petaling ... there's much barakah, sakinah, and hidayah in this particular mosque.

Haxa and all,
On Fridays ,the most masjids are overflowing with people, but on other days and nights, there are more columns than the people.

Apa perlukan disebut kempen mengunakan barangan2 tempatan, kempen dsbnya disebut dlm khutbah jumaat. Tidak cukupkah dengan akhbar, radio & tv? Tidak salah utk diulas peristiwa2 semasa tapi biarlah yg berkaitan agar kita sentiasa diingatkan kpd soal akhirat. (e.g: mengapa tidak ditekankan masalah2 sosial & salahlaku akhlak yg menimpa ummah. Inilah dunia akhir zaman, yg mengemukakan kebenaran dipandang sinis & jelek. Lihat apa reaksi sesetengah pihak masyarakat kita apabila mufti mengeluarkan fatwa bahawa teka sms adalah judi & haram, konsert sureheboh adalah haram dll. Ada pihak yg 'paranoid' kononnya sesetengah umat Islam di M'sia terlalu mementingkan akhirat & membelakangi kemajuan dunia tetapi di masa yang sama memandang remeh masalah kealpaan ummah terhadap akhirat sehingga sesetengahnya masih tidak sempurna ilmu fardhu ainnya (Abedib used to blog abt fardhu ain in past).
Now a day, friday is just another day. Very few of us concern abt its importance & 'fadhilat'. Living abroad is much harder esp if you live in a very small Muslim community.

I don't know whether my friends are good listeners at friday prayers or not but I suppose even if it comes to Friday prayers, you still have to "shop arounhd" for the good khutbahs. Haza - sympathies for the crowded prayers!
