Nobody Seems To Have Learnt From Lessons Of Highland Towers, Says Musa Hitam
By Alan Ting
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- "Nobody seems to have learnt from the lessons of the (Highland Towers) tragedy."
That was how former Deputy Prime Minister Tun Musa Hitam said when told of the landslide that killed four people in Taman Bukit Utama and Taman Bukit Mewah in Bukit Antarabangsa on Saturday.
"So many years have since passed and on Saturday there are incidents like this happening again, causing death (as well)," he told Bernama when contacted in Amsterdam.
Musa's son, Rashid Carlos and the latter's wife, Rozita, were among the 48 people who perished when one of the three condominium blocks of Highland Towers at Taman Hillview, located 1.5km away from Saturday's landslide scene, collapsed on Dec 11, 1993.
"It's very unpleasant memory, so sad. I personally experienced it. It has been hoped that whoever was guilty must be punished," Musa said.
The Highland Towers tragedy shocked the whole nation as it was the first in its history since Independence.
But the heart-wrenching stories did not end there as there had been other landslide-related incidents in the area, some even with fatalities.
One notable accident occured at 4.35 a.m on Nov 20, 2002 when a landslide flattened the double-storey bungalow of Affin Bank Bhd chairman Gen (Rtd)Tan Sri Ismail Omar.
His wife, Puan Sri Azizah Abdul Aziz, his son Hijaz, two in-laws, two grandchildren and two Indonesian maids were killed after tonnes of earth rolled down the slope.
The former soldier's bungalow was located about 300m away from Highland Towers.
NB:Let qoute from the last part of Ayat 9 Surah Az-Zumar:
Adakah sama orang-orang yang mengetahui dengan orang-orang yang tidak mengetahui? Sesungguhnya orang-orang yang dapat mengambil pelajaran dan peringatan hanyalah orang-orang yang berakal sempurna.
For photos,my friend Nazley who lives a few hundred metres from the affected bungalows took a few shots here.
