What is new?Flash flood occurs every time it rains heavily in KL.This in not 1 in 50 years or 1 in 100 years flood but it happens almost every week or every month. May be the damage to properties is minimal but the sufferings and the inconvenieces suffered by the public is quite significant.Just read the news today.
If the authorities can spend billions to mitigate more damaging floods that only occurs 1 in 50 years or 100 years, why can't some fund be allocated to prevent or mitigate flash floods that occurs in the cities almost monthly or even weekly?
I think we need to do some re-thinking on this subject matter.
As far as I could remember since I moved to KL in 1984,the same type of floods occurs at the same places in the city every time we have heavy rainfalls. It is not the rainfall, but the drainage infra-structure needs upgrading and maintenance.

I have been mulling over this thought: It appears to me, we in this part of the world tend to be more concerned about external beauty. You see our infrastructure and buildings built with beautiful aesthetically pleasing facades; incorporating this influence and that, picked up from all corners of the world. We tend to ignore the basic internal and very fundamental preambles of a city, the sewerage and drainage system. Perhaps more research should be done on the sewerage and drainage systems of cities which have undergone centuries of development and civilization.

Two hours of rainfall last night caused havoc in some part of the city of KL.As an engineer, how could I not feel ashamed of the status of our basic infrastructure when we are going to celebrate 50 yrs of independence in a few months time???
Do we need another 50 years to put our city in order?
