As we travel along the road, we could see a few sign-boards telling us where we are,how far away we are from certain locations and also how many kilometres more to our destination. At the same time, we are given certain information on the speed to travel and road-signs to forewarn us of the conditions of the road ahead.
The problems arised because some of us,in our rush to arrive at the destination, never bother to look at the road-signs( and some donot know what the road-signs look like!), some look but never read, some read but failed to understand and of course there are a few who who understand but just ignored the messages!
There are also people who keep on going any directions as they pleased because they donot know where they want to go.However, there are also others who forget their destinations because they were engrossed with good foods at R&R restaurants along the highway...
Life journey is just like what I mentined above. As we travel along, how do we know we are moving toward a successful life? Below is an excerpt I took from a book "Don't be Sad" by al-Qarnee(pages 354/355) that gives five milestones to measure or to monitor one's progress:
1.As one becomes more knowledgeable, one becomes more humble and more merciful to others.Think of an expensive pearl: the more heavy and valuable it is.the more deep it is in the ocean. A wise person knows that knowledge is a gift,Allah tests the one whom He gives it to.When one is thankful for the gift of knowledge, one will be raised in ranking.
{[ Allah will exalt in degree of those of you who believe, and those who have been granted knowledge]}-Qur'an 58:11
2.The more one performs good deeds, the more one becomes cautious and fearful,in the sense that he does not feel secure from error, such as a slip of the tougue or change of heart. He is always in a state of watching over himself and of being wary.He is like a careful bird: each time it lands on a tree,it soon leaves it for another, afraid of the skilled hunter and his bullet.
3.The older one gets, the less covetous one should be for this world, because he knows with certainty that his time is soon finished.
4.The more wealthy one becomes, the more generous should one be towards others. The wealthy muslims must understand that his wealth is a TRUST given to him,and that Allah is testing him in that wealth.
5.The higher one's status in society, the closer should he be to ordinary people, showing humility and fulfilling their needs.
Note: The road to failure is just the opposite of the above.

Abedib, thank you for this meaningful posting, sir. :-)
